January is registration month for kindergarten programs across the city. Kindergarten is a time for your child to experience social interaction, develop communication skills, and learn through discovery and exploration. It is the first step in formal education and provides the foundation for future learning. If you are wondering about choosing the right program, here is a checklist of things you may want to consider:
- teacher to student ratio;
- options for parental participation;
- approach to social skill development;
- appreciation of differing learning styles and learning at individual pace;
- the curriculum focus;
- enriched experiences outside of the classroom;
- critical thinking skills vs rote learning;
- outdoor playtime and physical education;
- opportunities to experience diversity;
Our Community Kindergarten program has operated for over 30 years. We provide a proven, well managed program that is publically funded. We limit our class size to 18 students. Our program emphasizes early literacy and language learning, with an introduction to letters, letter sounds, sight words, numbers and math concepts. Our focus on an enhanced learning environment means your child will benefit from a variety of unique and exciting activities and learning experiences. Our classroom is an integrated classroom, and we foster a strong sense of community between our families and our students. Our parents can also take advantage of the in-house out of school care program provided by the community association.
If you are a parent that is not sure if your child is ready for kindergarten, our Junior program may be the right choice. It follows a curriculum that is adapted for those children who are not yet ready for ECS because of their age or development. Children must be at least 4 years of age by September for this 5 day/wk program.
Kindergarten registration for the 2021 – 2022 school year opens by email on January 26th at 9:30 am on a first come, first served basis. Registration for our Junior Kindergarten program will begin on February 2 if spots are available. Check out our website at dcakids.com for more information!
